Basel Carnaval

Today the Smith program paid for a bunch of us to go to the Basel Carnaval, the biggest carnival in Switzerland!

The city of Basel, which is German-speaking, has many ornate and colorful buildings, and I found it to be my favorite Swiss city we've visited so far. I really wish I knew German (even though Swiss German is basically another language...)!

The parade lasts three days, but were spectators for only about three hours. First we had a nice traditional lunch of flour soup, meat, vegetables, and baked apples and ice cream. Then we headed out into the crowds to see the parade. All of the floats are supposed to be parodies of political issues, etc, so we didn't understand all of the jokes but the costumes were really neat to look at (even though some of them were very clown-like and therefore made me frightened!). In summary, I spent the whole day being showered in confetti and looking sad in hopes of being given some flowers.

We also nearly missed our train home, so we all ran back to the train station after pushing our way through the crowd, trailing after Jonathan Gosnell, which I'm sure was quite a sight for all the locals.

I now am getting ready for bed, heading to the UN early tomorrow to pick up my badge!
